The Writer of Ecclesiastes says "there is a time for everything under hreaven". Passing the baton, in whatever form that baton is, needs wisdom, discernment and timing. It requires patience, generosity of heart and yet more patience. For once having handed over we cannot take it back. It just remails for us to shout, "Go on my son, go on my daughter", from the sidelines and to be ready with support and encouragement and, by invitation only, with advice. The other side of the coin is that we hold on for too long and pass our 'sell-by' date. How sad when this happens, when our natural successors get tired of waiting or tired of us. We have seen so often the old man nobody wants to vote out because he has become an institution, a blockage. Once he was enthusiastic and energetic, yet now he is an encumbrance, for he has held on to the baton for too long We shall never know what God has for us next until we let go that which we hold. Should we be surprised when God goves us further responsibilities and work more appropriate for our season and understanding? |
